Legacy

This past year has been a tough one for us in many respects.  We've experienced the death of my husband's father in November 2004, our sister-in-law in May 2005 and the death of a very close friend's son-in-law this past week.  My husband's father was much older and you come to expect death as a person ages. The other two individuals were only 47 and their deaths were very unexpected.

Each memorial/funeral was very different in how the family responded to their grief and their memories of the individual.

What came to mind after the memorial service we attended this past week is - there is a legacy we leave behind.  It can be one of pain, bitterness, hatred, anger and very difficult memories or it can be one of hope, joy, laughter, belief in God and togetherness as a family.  I know I would prefer the later.

With our children and grandchildren, what memories will we leave them??  Will they know we loved them? Will they know we loved, honored and respected our spouse? Will our family be sitting there by themselves or will they be surrounded by many friends and acquaintances who bring them joy and laughter as they speak about us?  Will thoughts of us bring a smile to their face?  Will they know we prayed for them? Will they know we helped others in need?

Most importantly, will they know about our love for Christ? Will we have shared His love and story of grace?  Will we leave our family with hope and a future to see us again in heaven, or will we leave them wondering?
